On the fifth of September, I painted the tops of my garbage cans with the numbers: 1, 9, and 10. #9 is the ninth replacement garbage can since I've begun this project, #10 is the tenth replacement and #1 is an original that has lasted the complete duration of the project. I painted the lids so that I can track them from satellite via Google Earth and have posted a video of this process which can be viewed by clicking here. I am currently working on creating a website for this project with designer jon greene which will feature videos, photographs, satellite surveillance and a variety of other garbage can related observations.

Project Description

Robin and I live in a first floor apartment on Grand Avenue and it is not uncommon for us to have one of our garbage cans stolen. Every month they vanish and I'm left to call the City of Chicago to ask for more. We've had as many as 5 cans disappear in a week and I've even caught people stealing them before on numerous occasions. My newest project will be a chronicling of my garbage cans filled with surveillance video and garbage can tracking devices. I'm still working out the details but for now, I'm going to take a photo of our cans each morning to track the neighborhood garbage can thieving community.
